Your Opinion: What is the Very Best Anti-Malware Solution Available Today?

After a strong start to the site, we’ve of late had a dearth of comments. Totally understandable. We’re getting close to the holiday season, so if you’re thinking turkey and stuffing more than PowerShell and Terminal Services today, we won’t dock you any participation points.

That being said, however, a community just isn’t a community without…YOU. So, let me get today’s discussion started off right by asking your opinion: What is the very best anti-malware solution available today?

This can be a freeware tool or a for-cost tool. It can be designed for enterprises or the consumer. What we want to know is what tool gets the malware scrubbed from your infected systems every time and without fail. If you had to buy one tool that did it all, what would it be?

No doubt about it for me… Sunbelt Software VIPER. It keeps out of the way, it’s fast, and it’s up to date on the latest rogues.

Once an infection does happen, I prefer to use SysInternals AutoRuns to find the startup locations for the malware, and possibly MoveLater.exe to schedule a delete of the offending files with a reboot.

For a trojan infection that wasn’t fresh, it has to be a clean install and the user has to change all of their passwords, possibly also abandoning their email address.

The best is Nod32 from ESet. It not only has absolutely the best scores on tests like av-comparatives and vb100, it’s very configurable, and uses less resources than the others (especially CPU) and it doesn’t interrupt me (it even has a mode where it sends notices to an administrator instead of notifying the user).

@Don Jones, I haven’t had a chance to try it, but they do have a business version with a “Remote Administrator” server that can push updates and monitor. They’ve also been doing specific server scanners for a while for different email, file, and proxy/gateways … including scanners for ‘nix and Solaris etc.

@Joel “Jaykul” Bennett, I’ve actually gotten in touch with the people at ESET and may be getting an eval copy of NOD32 to test out myself. Since I’ve had some malware issues of my own of late, I’ll report back on my findings.
