Our New Look
I received a couple of requests to discuss our new look in some detail. First, as you may know, we’re running WordPress to host the majority of the site. Our new theme is called Arthemia, although it’s been tweaked pretty significantly from the original. For plugins, we use:
- Askimet, which helps protect us from comment spam and means we don’t have to force you to create an account in order to comment
- All-in-One SEO Pack, which does some search engine optimization for us
- Excerpts Deluxe, which automatically generates excerpts you see on the home page
- FeedBurner FeedSmith, which ensures our RSS feeds go through our new FeedBurner URL
- Get Recent Comments, which puts recent comments on the front page
- Google XML Sitemaps, which generates XML sitemaps of the site for Google to follow
- No WWW, which ensures that everyone uses “ConcentratedTech.com” - this helps with SEO and also with our stats
- PodPress, which turns our “Podcast” category into a real podcast feed
- Popularity contest, which creates the footer you see on the home page
- Secure and Accessible PHP Contact Form, which implements our “contact us” form
- Wordpress.com Stats, which lets us offload our stats collection to WordPress.com (our theme also implements Google Analytics for us)
- Wordpress Thread Comment, which implements our threaded comments. This is something that’ll hopefully become native in WordPress 2.7, with their acquisition of Intense Debate.
- WP-Cumulus creates our Flash-based Tag Sphere. Love to see your comments on that.
- WP-PageNavi implements the page navigation on the bottom of the page
- WP Tags to Technorati exposes our post tags to Technorati’s search engine (anyone still using that to search blogs?)
We’ve looked seriously at using Disqus, but its function to import our existing comments bombed. The nice part about it is that it notifies you via e-mail when someone replies to a comment you left, and lets you reply and post a comment) by simply replying to that e-mail. We’re still trying to get it working.
Hope that answers any idle curiosity you may have had - in more detail than you thought possible :).
