Continuing our Kindle-giveaway contest, here’s a nice and easy chance to get involved. Just leave a comment on this post briefly describing why you want a Kindle so darn much. Short comments (”I’m a gadget freak”) are fine! You can also post the title of the first Kindle book you plan to buy (mine was “Orphan’s Journey”). We’re going to give this thing away in a couple of weeks, and each comment you leave on any post (as described in the original post) counts as one “entry” into the raffle. Start typing!

It’s pretty simple for me–I’d just like the idea of having options without bulk. I’ve taken to carrying a purse instead of a backpack recently. It’s a pain to carry more than one hardcover in this silly thing.

I’d like the kindle because I want options.

I’m a voracious reader, and I’m constantly having to sort through my books in order to not get overrun with paper. The chance to have hundreds of book saved electronically is very attractive.

Options Options Options…. Last time I went on vacation, I found that I barely had room for my laptop because I had to carry all those books… Especially one was really heavy, called something like PowerShell TFM.

When I travel I take at least 10 paperbacks in my luggage (my library loves me). Although I love books, I prefer to read a book on the couch which makes a full size computer a tough choice. Other options have been only fair so far, PDA, Nokia N800. The Kindle makes sense. I think this may be the book of my dreams.

I’m already getting used to reading fiction on a PDA, but that won’t work for my usual non-fiction fare.

Kindle looks to be the most promising path into the future of electronic books, driven by a company that is clearly planning for a day when its core products will be far less popular if not obsolete. There’s no way Sony or any other old-media company can even pretend that its half-hearted attempts will be supported by its existing investment in the physical-media industry, which means Amazon’s Kindle is far more likely to be around in 10 or 20 years than anything else.

My bookshelves are full, but my appetite for reading will never end(despite what Steve Jobs might say). A Kindle will save me from causing my foundation to sink from the weight of the books in my house.

I am starting in a career in IT and the books I use for reference are huge. A friend of mine uses his Kindle to store all of his IT related books. We’re talking thousands of pages worth of material that he always has on hand. Besides not having to carry a bunch of heavy books, he can easily search all of his books for information. This would help me so much!

My vision sucks pretty badly. Not so bad that I need large print, but I do have to hold items pretty close. Flowable text sounds like an awesome feature that I could get a lot of use out of.

Besides the idea of a new “toy” Gadgets are good! I am starting to gather more and more books and lugging around a library with me is just an impossibility. This sounds like it would be very nice to have.

I would like to win a Kindle because my cash-strapped officemate keeps mentioning how he would like to have one (as far as I know he isn’t aware of this contest). The Kindle is exactly what I’ve been dreaming of. I am an insanely avid reader, and having a Kindle is like having an iTunes library of books along with an iPod for on the go reading.

I plan to download a ton of history books from Gutenberg, and if available, I will buy e-books of all of Steven Erikson’s novels.

I read a lot of books, but carrying numerous books around just to have some variety to read isn’t practical. So I started on the audiobook path on my iPod. It’s great to have a bunch of books available when I want them, but I don’t enjoy a book as much listening to an MP3. I think the Kindle, or something similar, would be great, since you have the ability to access a lot of reading material and you get the satisfaction of actually reading (which is the point of a book anyway). My first books would probably be something from James Rollins. He also did the new Indiana Jones book, based on the movie, so hopefully that comes out on the Kindle soon.

Love my Kindle…would love to get one for my husband who spends a lot of time in airports and hotel rooms and always has “just finished” his current book and can’t find one he wants in the hotel lobby or the airport.

The first book I downloaded was Pillars of the Earth, which was soemthing I always wanted to read, but didn’t want to lug around. It was “ok”. I don’t see what all the fuss is about, but I have read lots more since getting the Kindle. Love it, love it!

P.s. Omnivore’s Dilemma is awesome.

Yes, I’m a gadget freak, and, worse, a gadget freak on a budget. The vast majority of my reading now is weblogs, sitting at a computer, and I’d really like to see if having a Kindle would A) help to change this balance back toward longer works, such as books and B) expand the number of places where I find an opportunity to read. I already carry a Day Planner: adding a kindle to my handful should be minor. Having ready access to PDFs, weblogs, articles and books sounds like a wonderful way to increase my pace of learning and open up some “in front of the keyboard” time for actual productive work.

You can probably forget that! The Kindle is pretty clearly a device for Amazon to make money, not anyone else like Safari. Although having a device like that would certainly make Safari a lot more valuable.

I am really anxious to try the Kindle. I have just completed a degree in Information Technology and have been carrying around these heavy computer manuals for three years and can’t stand the thought of having to carry around any more books. I would like to complete a course in Computer Forensics over the next year and would really like to see the textbooks on the Kindle. Did I mention I have been out of high school for 29 years and going to college has been a dream of mine for years.
My first book purchase would be: Sail by James Patterson. By the way, Thanks for the opportunity to win this great piece of technology.

Well, I have had a few days with my Kindle now and love it. I’m reading a Dean Koontz novel and I’m much more into the story than what it is on.

I hated the full length Next Page button on the right side of the thing, so I fixed that little problem with very careful application of superglue all the way around except for the Back button.

The Back button is too easy to push. I’m not sure yet where it takes you back TO, but it is a long ways from where you were. So that I covered with a little piece of scotch tape that extends about 1/8″ from the edges of the button (except for the outside, where I neatly trimmed it with a razor blade. It still works, you just have to be a little firmer about pushing the button, which was the objective.

Now I can hold my Kindle by the right side and use my left hand for paging forward and back. I am also able to set it aside if the phone or doorbell rings, or I am otherwise interrupted … without having to treat it like crystal for fear I will end up off page. Now I can set it down and pick it up with my right hand without thinking about it.

So, although it is probably a warranty voiding move disabling the Next Page button on the right side (I think scotch tape over the Back button is ok), I like my Kindle a lot better with a handle. I don’t delicately pick up a paperback and carefully position my fingers to read a paperback … should not have to do so with the Kindle either - it makes it less “book-like”

Still need one for my girlfriend.

Again, all in all, delighted with the purchase - highly recommended. Better for me with the right side turned into a handle, but it was great before that too. I just know I am going to be spending a lot of time with this thing and want the experience to be as comfortable and natural as possible.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t get away without carrying a laptop when I travel. Nevermind technology, the older I get, the heavier the laptop and accessories become. I’ve pretty much stopped carrying books because they add too much weight. With a Kindle, I could read something useful and enjoyable when I travel, instead of stupid airline mags.

Agree 100%, Sherwin! Although I use a MacBook Air to cut down on weight (I do try to travel light, and my laptop isn’t a desktop replacement), adding the Kindle has definitely made flying easier for me, especially as I seem to be reading a lot of books normally available only in a larger trade paperback size or, worse yet, hardcovers.

The “Back” button is like the back button in a browser - in fact, if you’re in the Kindle Store (which is Web-based), the Back button makes sense. When reading a book it typically goes back to the home screen, since that’s usually where you were before you went into the book.

I switched to ebooks when I got my first PDA (a Visor) over ten years ago. When ereader.com was still peanutpress.com. I immediately liked the option to carry tons of books without the bulk. I also like the privacy of these readers. When I am reading a book on my PDA, no one knows, so I don’t have people hanging over my should asking “What you reading” “Oh, what’s it about” “Blah, blah” Quiet I’m reading! Anyway, I would like a kindle for the bigger screen to read at home. I usually use my laptop to read my ebooks when at home, and the kindle size is less bulky. I think it would be better to use on the plane than the little PDA screen, too. That’s my story…

I’d really like a kindle. I don’t know if you are still having a kindle raffle, but i will post just for fun anyway. I’m a gadget freak, and a soon to be college student. This would be really handy to have a college. It would be really helpful for studying for exams, especially since i never really figured a good way to study. It’s alway’s hard to study on the computer, because of the eye strain. I’ve heard good things about the kindle being good to your eye’s. I’d really like one please.
